BELOIT — With a ceremonial slip down the slide on Friday afternoon, the Stateline Family YMCA made a big splash with news of its opening date next week.
Stateline Family YMCA CEO Doug Britt and Board of Directors Chair Tom Ptacin announced the Beloit location’s opening on Thursday, Oct. 5 via signs following their descent down the slide and plunge into the pool. The event was aired to fans on Facebook Live.
Ptacin said the opening is an event five years in the making.
“We are all excited,” added Britt. “It’s like Christmas Day.”
Britt said he is excited for the community of Beloit to have the downtown location and for kids and families to have a place to enjoy together.
The new YMCA occupies a large portion of the former Beloit Corporation structure along Beloit's riverfront. ABC Supply Co. co-founder Diane Hendricks donated the 80,000-square-foot space last year to be part of the growing Ironworks campus.
The $11 million facility will offer a recreational family pool, a separate lap pool, a full day care center, four new multipurpose rooms, two racquetball courts, an indoor track and a fitness center three times the size of the one at the YMCA's current facility.
The center also will have a Beloit Health System sports medicine facility on site.
Crews recently finished work on the daycare, gymnasium, locker rooms, multipurpose rooms and all administrative offices, according to the CCI news release.
The opening of the new Stateline YMCA in downtown Beloit had been delayed twice, due to challenges with subcontractors and materials and higher-than-average water levels during the warm winter.
Officials anticipate the updated facility will boost membership totals, which sit around 16,000. Officials project a 20 percent hike in membership totals.
