Ninety-six brokers affiliated with RE/MAX offices across northern Illinois recently earned recognition for their career achievements.

RE/MAX brokers are eligible for four career awards, each marking an important professional milestone while they are affiliated with RE/MAX. The awards, in ascending order of significance are: Hall of Fame, Lifetime Achievement, Circle of Legends and Luminary of Distinction.

Seventy-one brokers were inducted into the RE/MAX Hall of Fame, whose members have earned more than $1 million in gross commissions while affiliated with RE/MAX. Rockford’s own Julie Humpal, RE/MAX Property Source, was named to the Hall of Fame.

NorthStar Medical Radioisotopes LLC has hired Lisa Holst as vice president of sales and marketing.

Holst has more than 25 years of sales and marketing experience in the pharmaceutical and medical imaging industries, most recently as senior director of marketing at Navidea Biopharmaceuticals. She joins NorthStar as it advances toward U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of its RadioGenix intelligent isotope separation system and its non-fission, non-uranium-based brand of the medical radioisotope molybdenum-99 (Mo-99).

“Lisa has a proven ability to launch, grow and support clinically complex brands,” said NorthStar Chairman, President and CEO George P. Messina. “Her strengths in educating, motivating and empowering sales teams and her skill in applying in-depth clinical knowledge when communicating with customers make her a great addition to our management team as we take the final steps toward becoming the first domestic supplier of Mo-99 since 1989.”

Before joining Navidea Biopharmaceuticals, Holst was a consultant to that company’s marketing and medical affairs teams. Prior to that, she was associate director, field sales for Lantheus Medical Imaging. Holst has a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, Massachusetts.

Heather Kelley, Principal at V2 Marketing Communications recently attended American Advertising Federation (AAF) Council of Governors conference and Hall of Achievement awards reception in New York City. Honorees included actor Robert De Niro and advertising executives from Hearst, Nestle, USA Network and was sponsored by Toyota. Kelley is currently Governor of American Advertising Federation (AAF) District 6 and is Past President of American Advertising Federation (AAF)-Northern Illinois.


Edmond J. Fennell R.Ph., MBA, NorthStar vice president of business development since 2013, has retired but will continue to serve the company as a valued confidant and as a scientific and market advisor.

Bonnie Arrington, Karla Rodgers and Todd Martinovich of Spectrum Insurance Agency, 5301 E. State St., Rockford, attended “Protecting Business through Industry Endorsements” seminar presented by Pekin Insurance in Rochelle, Illinois, in March. Each received three credits towards their Continuing Education requirements set forth by the Department of Insurance in the State of Illinois. Rodgers also has successfully completed the “Insuring Commercial Property” exam, leading toward her Certified Insurance Service Representative (CISR) designation.

Shirley Geiser of Spectrum Insurance Agency of Durand, 403 Center St., Durand, Illinois, attended the Pekin Insurance 2016 Awards Banquets and Appreciation Banquet that was held in March. She received an award for her dedication and showing superiority in the sales of life and health insurance. Geiser also attended ‘Protecting Business through Industry Endorsements’ seminar presented by Pekin Insurance in Wisconsin Dells on March 22. She received three credits towards her Continuing Education requirements set forth by the Department of Insurance in the State of Illinois.


Bruce Graham, Brandon Latino and Karla Rodgers of Spectrum Insurance Agency attended an ethics class presented by ServiceMaster on April 12 in Rockford, Illinois. They each received three credits towards their Continuing Education requirements set forth by the Department of Insurance in the State of Illinois.

Nancy Salsbury of Spectrum Insurance Agency successfully completed the “Control of Risk” seminar held at Burr Ridge, Illinois. The “Control of Risk” course attended was offered by Independent Insurance Association of Illinois. After the successful completion of five courses covering all major areas of the risk management field and five comprehensive examinations, Salsbury will be awarded the Certified Insurance Counselors designation by The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research, the nation’s foremost provider of professional insurance and education. The designation of Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) also has been conferred upon Salsbury, following her successful completion of a rigorous insurance education program sponsored by the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors.

Ballou is a member of the American Bankers Association (ABA) Marketing Network and graduated from the ABA School of Bank Marketing and Management (SBMM) in 2008. In 2015, she earned the designation of Certified Financial Marketing Professional (CFMP) through the Institute of Certified Bankers (ICB), a subsidiary of the American Bankers Association (ABA). Ballou is also a member of the Government Affairs Advisory Council for the Greater Beloit Chamber of Commerce. She resides in Roscoe, Illinois, with her husband and three children.

Barbara Ann Burmeister has joined Keefe Real Estate’s office at 573 N. Pine Street, Burlington, Wisconsin. The accomplished residential Realtor has over a decade of experience working with buyers and sellers throughout the tri-county area, and northernmost Illinois communities as well.

SwedishAmerican, a division of UW Health is pleased to introduce our new radiation oncologist, Joycelyn Speight, MD, PhD, DABR.

Speight is a diplomat of the American Board of Radiology and is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). She has been a practicing physician for 17 years and is board certified in both Radiation Oncology and Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Speight is widely published in peer reviewed journals, has won multiple awards for teaching and clinical research, and has also been selected as one of the Best Doctors in American multiple years in a row.

Speight received her medical degree from State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn. She completed residency training in Radiation Oncology at the University of Southern California and Fellowship training in brachytherapy and urologic oncology at the University of California San Francisco.

Rock River Water Reclamation District Director Tim Hanson announced the hiring of attorney J. Hanley as General Counsel.

“The District faces unique and complex legal issues on a daily basis and thus, for the betterment of serving local residents and businesses, our board and leadership team felt it necessary to hire general counsel,” said Tim Hanson, the District’s Director. “J.’s experience, leadership and disposition will be an invaluable asset to the District.”

Hanley is a Rockford native, having attended Boylan Catholic High School. He graduated from Providence College and from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2006.

Hanley began his legal career as an Assistant State’s Attorney for Winnebago County. In January of 2009, he became an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Arizona. Hanley returned to Rockford in the Spring of 2013 to work as a commercial litigator at Hinshaw & Culbertson in Rockford.

William E Mears, CCIM, SIOR of Coldwell Banker Commercial McGuire Mears & Associates has been recognized by both Coldwell Banker Commercial and the CoStar Group for his accomplishments in 2016.

Mears received the No.1 Sales Professional Award in the state of Wisconsin for Coldwell Banker Commercial. This marks his third consecutive year receiving this honor.

Mears was named to the Gold level of the Coldwell Banker Commercial Circle of Distinction, an honor bestowed upon the top-ranking producers among all CBC-affiliated sales professionals based on their transaction revenue for 2016. He also earned a spot in the Elite “Top Two” within Coldwell Banker Commercial for 2016, a designation that is reserved for the elite top 2 percent of producers among nearly 3,000 CBC-affiliated sales professionals. This marks the first time a McGuire Mears & Associates agent has received either of these honors.

The CoStar Group named Mears as a 2016 CoStar Power Broker in the Madison market for based on the total lease transactions he closed during the year. In order to be selected for this honor, Mears’s overall transaction volumes were evaluated by CoStar against other commercial real estate brokers active in the region, and subsequently ranked among the top brokers in the market.

Twenty-one individuals composing the Class of 2017 were recognized at the ACEC WI Awards Banquet on March 24.

Leadership Institute is a six-session leadership development series tailored specifically for Wisconsin’s design community. Established in 2006, this program focuses on the business side of the profession. It is designed to launch professionals on a development track for successful project management and principal positions. Participants gain a well-rounded training on the business side of the profession, the foundation needed to be an effective leader and a network of lasting peer relationships.

Doctor John Myers, who for the past 17 years was a cardiovascular surgeon at SwedishAmerican and most recently in 2014 became the Director of Medical Affairs and currently serves as the Director of Medical Education, retired from his position on Friday, May 5.

Myers began his career in Rockford as a cardiovascular surgeon in 1997 and was appointed Medical Director of Cardiovascular Surgical Services at SwedishAmerican in 2001. He has been a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford since 1998 and has served on SwedishAmerican’s Board of Directors and Board of Trustees, as well as the SwedishAmerican Foundation and Rock River Valley Blood Center boards. As Medical Advisor and Conference Moderator, he was instrumental in bringing the SwedishAmerican Cardiology Millennium Conference to Rockford.

SwedishAmerican, a division of UW Health, recently honored one of its own with the Daisy of the Year Award, an award to show nurses how deserving they are and to honor the super-human work nurses do for patients and families every day.

SwedishAmerican Regional Cancer Center Radiation Oncology Nurse Navigator Linda Lennon, of Roscoe, is this year’s Daisy of the Year Award winner for 2017. Lennon was nominated for making a lasting impression upon the heart of a 22-year-old-patient. While that patient experienced radiation therapy, Lennon was her nurse and played a critical role in her support system. Lennon often called the patient at home to check on her symptoms, make sure she had the best care possible and was a great listener especially on difficult days.

The Daisy Foundation was established by Mark and Bonnie Barnes to honor the exceptional nursing care their son, Patrick, received while battling ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura). By honoring the nurses who go “above and beyond” with the Daisy Award, healthcare organizations have an outstanding tool to add focus to their patient/family-centered care throughout the year.

SwedishAmerican BetterLife Wellness Medical Director Dr. Thomas Schiller, MD, MBA, FAAFP recently presented at the NFP Benefit Planning Services Seminar at NIU Rockford on May 10. Schiller spoke about health care in the Rockford community, what employers should know about the health of our community and the importance of improving population health.

UW Health Surgery at SwedishAmerican is pleased to welcome its newest General Surgeons, Jason Klovning, MD and Paul Batty, MD, FACS.

Klovning comes to SwedishAmerican with more than nine years of surgical experience and is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He has a special interest in laparoscopic surgery and colon resection, as well as hernias. Klovning also is a senior Aeronautical Medical Examiner for the FAA.

Batty has more than 26 years of surgical experience and is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is board certified in general surgery and has a special interest in minimally invasive surgery, along with DaVinci Robotic surgery. Batty is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and received the Vitas Peoples Physician Choice Award.

Rockford Mutual Insurance Company recently hired Jesse Suttner as a claim representative. With more than three years of insurance experience as the former office manager for Allstate Insurance in Huntley, Illinois, Suttner is responsible for investigating and concluding auto claims.  Suttner earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and is licensed in property and casualty insurance.
