Mary Kay Morrison, of Rockford, Illinois, was honored with a plaque and gavel during the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor (AATH) annual conference in Orlando, Florida, for completing two years as association president. Kathy Velasco, President of V-2 Marketing, was presented with AATH’s 2017 Wilde About Humor Award. This award goes to a company or business that demonstrates the utilization of applied and therapeutic humor in the world of business. This year’s conference theme “Humor: The Power & Purpose of Play,” focused on the latest research in the field of neuroscience and its relationship to therapeutic humor and well-being. In attendance were humor enthusiasts representing many professional fields including healthcare, education and business. Participants came from throughout the U.S., as well as Australia, Canada, Japan, Nigeria, Norway, and Finland.

First National Bank and Trust Company (FNBT) is pleased to announce that Ryan Renz has joined the company as controller and officer. Renz comes to FNBT with nearly 15 years of banking experience, most recently at Marion Center Bank in Indiana, Pennsylvania, where he held the position of controller for over four years. Before that, he worked as an accounting officer and controller at Indiana First Savings Bank, during which time he also worked with the bank’s teller and deposit operations, bank secrecy act (BSA) compliance, and audit coordinator. Outside of banking, Renz has worked as a staff accountant for a certified public accountant, and for a logistics and supply company in Waukesha. As controller at FNBT, Renz will work closely with the bank’s chief financial officer, David McCoy, in preparing month-end financial reports, budget reconciliation and review, as well as regulatory reporting. A graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and a Master’s degree in Business Administration, Renz sits on the board of directors for the university’s alumni association, and was a member of the Rotary Club of Indiana-Midday. He recently relocated to East Troy, Wisconsin with his fiancée, Becky. Renz is based at FNBT’s Beloit-Grand Avenue office.

In this role, Rand is responsible for FNBT’s branches in Rock County, including the four branches in Beloit (Grand Avenue, Cranston Road, Inman Parkway, and Madison Road) as well as the Clinton and Janesville offices. He serves as a member of the retail management team to develop sales and service plans, coordinate and manage strategic priorities that support bank-wide initiatives, as well as coach and develop branch managers. Rand comes to FNBT with 25 years of banking experience, most recently at BMO Harris Bank in Janesville, Wisconsin where he held the positions of Branch Manager and before Group Market Manager. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater, Rand holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with an emphasis in finance. He is a lifelong Beloit-area resident and currently sits on the board of directors for the United Way – Blackhawk region. His past community involvement includes work with the Stateline United Way, Beloit Area Crimestoppers, Beloit Meals on Wheels, and the Rock River Valley Blood Center. In her new role, Fields will be responsible for developing new banking and lending relationships, and providing Sound Advice to existing clients in the bank’s Walworth, Wisconsin market. Her previous role as a senior credit analyst for FNBT uniquely positions her as an expert in commercial loan underwriting, analyzing financial statements and tax returns, evaluating collateral positions and assessing loan risk for the bank.
Fields joined FNBT in 2011 and now has over 25 years of banking experience. She attended University of Wisconsin at Whitewater and has prior experience at two other local financial institutions as both a credit analyst and commercial operations supervisor.
Fields resides in the Rockton, Illinois area with her family. She volunteers her time with her children’s schools, chaperoning field trips and participating in the school Booster Club activities. She will be based at the bank’s Walworth, Wisconsin office located at 105 State Road 67.
After an impressive 48 year career at First National Bank and Trust (FNBT), Margaret Palubinski, Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager of the Clinton Branch has announced plans to retire. Palubinski began her journey with the bank in 1969 as a bookkeeper. In her employment application, she wrote, “Bank work, I understand, is interesting, progressive and there is always a demand for efficient tellers. I am interested in working with the public and I think a career in banking will help me to understand ‘money’ a little better.” There couldn’t have been a better fit than FNBT for Margaret. She quickly transitioned into the role of proof operator and also spent time as a switchboard operator, accountant and teller before being promoted to her first branch manager position in 1985. She moved to the Beloit-Inman Parkway branch in 1988. In June 1994, Palubinksi was named the branch manager of FNBT’s Clinton branch where she has truly become the face of the bank among her customers in the community. An avid learner herself, Palubinski led a group of employees dedicated to bringing financial literacy into schools throughout FNBT’s branch footprint and helped the company earn the “Bankers Promoting Financial Literacy” award from the Wisconsin Bankers Association for the past several years.
Dr. Bill Gorski, who for the past 16 years has been president and CEO of SwedishAmerican, a division of UW Health, retired from his position effective July 1. Dr. Michael Born, previously SwedishAmerican’s Chief Medical Officer and Chief Quality Officer, succeeded Gorski as president and CEO. Gorski and his wife Sue moved to Rockford in 1977, as he began his residency in family practice at the University of Illinois College of Medicine-Rockford. Upon completion of his residency, Gorski joined the Five Points Family Medicine practice where he served thousands of patients over the next 20 years. Gorski received a key to the city of Rockford and a proclamation from Mayor Tom McNamara at his retirement dinner on June 30 at Prairie Street Brewhouse. It states that Mayor McNamara proclaimed June 29, 2017 as “Dr. William R. Gorski Day.” Gorski not only received a key from current Mayor Tom McNamara but also an old key from former Mayor John McNamara.
After 31 years of service, Tom Myers, vice president of marketing and strategic planning, retired from SwedishAmerican on July 1. Tom began his journey with SwedishAmerican in March of 1986 as director of communications, and in October of 1989 was promoted to vice president of marketing and strategy. Tom’s tenure included working closely with three CEOs: Dr. Bob Henry, Dr. Bob Klint and for the last 16 years, Dr. Bill Gorski.
SwedishAmerican employees Steve Kirschbaum, Dwan Montgomery, Sharon Goldsmith, Sue Thompson and Tonya Gray completed training offered by the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP), in Anniston, Alabama, in June. The CDP is operated by the United States Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and is the only federally-chartered Weapons and Mass Destruction (WMD) training facility in the nation.

Nafsi received her medical degree from Baqai Medical and Dental College in Pakistan and completed internal medicine residency at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She continued training with a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at John H. Stroger Hospital in Chicago.
Nafsi has been practicing for nine years and is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine. She practices all facets of pulmonology, with a special interest in bronchoscopy, interventional pulmonology, pulmonary hypertension, asthma, COPD and lung cancer.

Dr. Mike Werckle has assumed the role of CEO at Hospice Care of America, based in Rockford, after submitting a letter of intent to purchase the hospice.
He previously served as Hospice Care of America’s Medical Director for seven years before taking on the new position. Werckle has a long history of service to the medical field, having served as the Associate Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Assistant Dean and Director of Education for the University of Illinois College of Medicine of Rockford, Chairman of the Department of Medicine and President of the medical staff at Rockford Memorial Hospital. He also has 25 years of private practice experience in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics.
